A 23-year-old man from Bulawayo has been convicted of assaulting his own mother for bringing her lover home. Bhekumuzi Ngwenya of Lobengula Extension is reported to have throttled his mother Ms Sikhanyisiwe Ngwenya after he found that she had brought home her lover for the night.
Western Commonage magistrate Mr Stephen Ndlovu convicted Ngwenya of domestic violence despite his spirited denial. He sentenced Ngwenya to three months in prison. However, the sentence was suspended on condition that he performs 105 hours of community service at Lobengula Secondary School after his mother had pleaded with the court to give her errant son community service only.
In passing judgement, Magistrate Ndlovu said,
A person who has the guts to assault his own mother is not fit to be in society. Culturally that is taboo and it is a serious offence so you do not deserve to be in the community. Zimbabwe
