A callous Chiredzi woman who turned a blind eye to her daughter’s s_exual abuse by her husband, instead treating the lacerations on her privates to conceal the abuse was last week sentenced to 36 months behind bars for defeating the course of justice.

The 41-year-old woman, who is not named to protect the identity of the minor, is reported to have sternly instructed her 10-year-old daughter not to tell a single soul of the ra_pe ordeal after she had revealed to her that her stepfather had ra_ped her.

Quizzed upon her arrest, why she had hid the abuse, she confessed that she was only trying to protect her marriage.

She will serve an effective 24 months for both counts after magistrate Constance Mutandwa set aside 12 months on condition of good behavior.

The woman was also convicted for contravening section 7 (3) of the Children’s Act Chapter 5.06, which speaks to ”ill-treatment or neglect of children and young persons”, after she neglected and exposed her daughter to ill-treatment by leaving her in the custody of her lover, knowing very well he was in the habit of abusing her.

It is reported that on an unknown date from mid-January to February 9, 2019, the woman’s husband took advantage of his wife’s absence and ra_ped the girl, threatening to assault her with a switch if she screamed.

After the mothers cover-up, the accused allegedly took advantage and continued ra_ping the complainant several times on different occasions, using the same mondus operandi.

He was however arrested after police got a tip-off from members of the public.

The husband was sentenced to 18 years behind bars for s_exually abusing his stepdaughter several times.

Two years were set aside on the condition of good behavior.
