A 19-year-old student was abducted from a bus stop and then raped by up to 12 men for eight hours in the latest sexual atrocity to rock India.

The victim was left with a string of injuries after her ordeal and is barely able to speak, according to her mother.

A 19-year-old student was abducted from a bus stop and then raped by up to 12 men for eight hours in the latest sexual atrocity to rock India.

The victim was left with a string of injuries after her ordeal and is barely able to speak, according to her mother.

The girl was abducted on Wednesday morning in Mahendergarh, in the northern state of Haryana, after two of the accused saw her at the bus stop. They offered her water which she believes was spiked and then put her in a car.

She told police she was taken to a house about 25 miles (40km) away where a number of other men arrived. The gang then took it in turns to rape her, according to The Times of India.

She was eventually driven back to the bus stop and dumped. One of the men phoned her family and told them to collect her.

Three of the alleged attackers have been identified as Pankaj, who is in the army, Nishu and Manish. There have been no arrests yet but police have released pictures of the three men in an attempt to find them.

The victim is in a local hospital where she has been treated for injuries to her back, shoulders and genitals, according to The Times of India.

Her mother told the paper: "She has severe pain in her throat, and is unable to talk or swallow anything. They probably held her by the throat, which led to this pain."

The family is furious that no arrests have been made so far – and that the authorities were slow to act, according to India Today.

The case is the latest in a string of horrific rapes and murders which have rocked India over the last few years. In 2012, Jyoti Singh, a young woman who dreamed of being a physiotherapist, was assaulted on a bus.

Her injuries were so severe she later died, sparking mass protests, outrage and a call for change in a society where women face huge discrimination and live in fear of sexual assault.

Despite the outcry, there has been little change since Jyoti's death at the age of 23.

This year alone saw the gang rape and murder of eight-year-old Asifa Bano in Kathua in Jammu.

Asifa was also believed to have been lured away, this time from feeding her horses before being drugged in a village temple.

She was held captive for days and repeatedly raped, before being stoned to death.

Eight men, including four police officers, have been accused of her murder.

Last week a 19-year-old man killed himself after being forced to watch his girlfriend gang-raped.

Around 100 sexual assaults are reported to police in India every day, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
