A former college football player who had been previously drafted by the Atlanta Falcons has been arrested by authorities after he was suspected of having sex with an underage girl.
23-year-old Justin Crawford was caught in the act by his wife this past Saturday and reported to the police, resulting in his apprehension as well as numerous charges being brought against him.
According to the Daily Mail, Chakeya Crawford, the footballer’s wife and the mother of his two young sons, saw her husband standing over a 12-year-old girl with his penis exposed at 5 am on Saturday morning.
The victim had been sleeping over at their Georgia residence and Chakeya told investigators that she initially thought nothing of it, but that the incident soon began to worry her.
The Ledger-Enquirer reported that during Crawford’s preliminary hearing on Monday, police said that Chakeya saw her husband standing over the girl with an erection. However, the wife denied having said any such thing, clarifying that when she caught Crawford exposed, he immediately ran into the kitchen to cover himself up.
She said because it was 5 am and because she had not seen anything, she decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. But the actual account would soon come to light.
When Chakeya took the girl back to her mother, the 12-year-old said she had been asleep in the living room when Crawford came in. She said Crawford had her perform oral sex on him before he had intercourse with her. The 12-year-old was taken to a hospital for testing and treatment, with doctors administering a rape kit to collect DNA evidence of the crime.
Crawford initially denied culpability but later admitted to the crime to the police, confessing that he did have oral sex and intercourse with the pre-teen, but said that the latter was the girl’s idea. He was subsequently charged with aggravated child molestation, sodomy, and enticing a child for indecent purposes.
While at the Hardaway High School in Columbus, Georgia, Crawford played quarterback, running back, receiver, safety, and punter. He was named the Offensive Player of the Year as a senior, rushing 825 yards and seven touchdowns. He would go on to attend Northwest Mississippi Community College for two years before transferring to West Virginia University.
In two seasons at WVU, Crawford ran for 1,184 yards (2016) and 1,061 yards (2017) but would skip the team’s bowl game to avoid injury and prepare for the 2018 NFL draft. He made it to the big leagues when he signed with the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent but was released from the team roster this past September following a string of poor performances in the preseason games.
The 23-year-old is currently being held at the Muscogee County Jail without bond. The case will be heard by Muscogee Superior Court in the coming day.
